Oil on canvas, applied to panel. Attached is the report of the Finarte historical auction appraisal of 17/6/1998, with attribution to Angelo Morbelli. The painting is dated to the beginning of the 20th century, a period that saw the artist alternating scientific studies on chromatic decomposition with the execution of important works of a social nature, especially related to old age. Close to the pointillist sphere, Morbelli also in this work creates the shadows of the figure by clearly dividing the colors with pure and clear lines. The female figure emerges from the background with a clarity and precision of contours determined by the chromatic and light contrasts, as well as by the roundness of the human form compared to the rigorous linearity of the background. The work is presented in a period frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Angelo Morbelli (1853-1919)

Born in Alessandria in 1853, Angelo Morbelli at the age of 14, thanks to a scholarship obtained from the Municipality of Alessandria, was able to move to Milan and study at the Brera Academy under the guidance of Giuseppe Bertini, Raffaele Casnedi and Luigi Riccardi. Here he met Francesco Filippini, Eugenio Gignous, Gaetano Previati, Giovanni Segantini, Cesare Tallone, Achille Tominetti, Emilio Longoni and Giovanni Sottocornola. The academic years represented for him a period full of recognition and personal satisfaction. In 1874, with the help of the maestro Bertini, he participated for the first time in the annual Braidense review. He made his debut at the Promotrice delle Belle Arti in Turin in 1879, and returned there in 1892, 1896 and 1912. From 1880 he turned his attention to reality and social issues, with particular attention to old age and loneliness. In 1883 he became friends with the merchants Vittore and Alberto Grubicy De Dragon who bought some of his works and included him among the artists of their gallery present at the Italian Exhibition in London in 1888. From the last decade of the 19th century, Morbelli converted to Divisionism, also accentuating the human and pictorial interest in the old people hospitalized in charity homes, a subject to which he had already dedicated himself. On the other hand, also due to his incurable deafness he was led to prefer the silent and battered environments of the hospices. Between 1902 and 1903 he set up a studio in the rooms of the Pio Albergo Trivulzio where he created a series of paintings that recorded situations, environments and human reactions that took place inside the hospice. In the last productive phase, Angelo Morbelli dedicated himself above all to the study of the landscape and the theme of the ballerina. In 1912 he began writing, in the form of a private diary, La Via Crucis del Divisionismo, in which he noted a series of reflections on the divisionist technique accompanied by comments relating to the methodology and transcriptions of phrases and thoughts of famous artists, writers and musicians. Morbelli died in Milan in 1919.
