Landscape

Oil on board. Signature and date at the bottom left. On the back there is a stamp of "Domenico De Bernardi-Besozzo" and authenticity. De Bernardi's painting is part of the 19th and 20th century Lombard landscape tradition. He always lived in Besozzo, his birthplace in the province of Varese, but travelled extensively in and out of Italy, gathering impressions and searching for new landscapes to revive them in his work. In particular, he gained new inspiration from a trip to Libya in the 1930s, from which he returned with a more lively and Mediterranean palette. Landscape painting was his favourite genre, but he was also often attracted to 'still life' with equally significant results. The small landscape presented here is a view of hills with higher peaks in the background, perhaps the artist's native pre-Alpine areas; a small village fills the centre of the scene, in which the widespread fences of the crops stand out in particular. The painting comes in a coeval frame.

Oil on the table. On the back there is a label of the Galleria Marescalchi in Bologna with the title, the date, the technical data of the work and the catalog number (cat. 91). Born in Viareggio, Alessandro Tofanelli first graduated from the Lucca art institute, and then moved from 1977 to 1980 in Milan to attend the Brera Academy in Milan, collaborating in those years as an illustrator for several magazines published by Rizzoli and Mondadori. It immediately began to establish itself, winning national awards; his pictorial works are exhibited in important Italian and foreign art galleries and are part of important private and public, national and international collections. Tofanelli has always combined his pictorial activity as a professional photographer and video documentary maker. Numerous are in fact his video works broadcast by the RAI networks, as well as his photographic services have been hosted in specialized publications. In all his artistic forms, Tofanelli expresses the strong bond with nature: immersed in it, a friendly nature, he lives it, breathes it, makes it his, interprets it giving it voice and paints it, transforming it into poetry and representing it in a a world that seems imaginary, but is rather a world that was, a world in itself, a reality bordering on dreams, an Eden in which life is simple and marked by the slow rhythm of daily gestures, and is identified in objects of everyday life in which the presence of Man can be perceived, telling his life and history without ever depicting him. The work is presented in a frame.

Libeccio

Oil on table. Signed lower right. On the back, further signature, title and cartouche of the Galleria Dedalo in Milan. Giulio Cesare Vinzio, an artist of Livornese origin, artistically trained in Florence, attending the studio of Giovanni Fattori. In the countryside around Florence he begins to paint landscapes from life, with oxen, peasants, horses as protagonists, landscapes of the Maremma, rendered with bright colors and strong chromatic contrasts. From the beginning of the twentieth century, while exhibiting throughout Italy and abroad, he moved to Piedmont and approached pointillist painting: while continuing to prefer rural landscapes and bucolic realities, he represented them in the atmospheres of twilight, nocturnal, dawns, no longer made with broad brushstrokes, but small strokes divided between them. In 1921 he joined the Labronico Group, which brought him closer to the realist naturalism of the origins. The work presented here offers a glimpse of a Maremma beach, beaten by the libeccio, the wind that blows from the south across the Mediterranean. The technique is that of realism, using large and superimposed brush strokes. In frame.

Mercury and Argus Oil on Wooden Table Italy XVIII Century

ARARPI0146689
Mercury and Argus Oil on Wooden Table Italy XVIII Century

Oil on the table. Northern Italian (Venetian?) School of the 18th century. The shape of the table suggests that the painting was part of a furnishing set, inserted in a composite wall structure together with other mythological-allegorical scenes. The painting represents a mythological episode narrated in Ovid's Metamorphoses: Mercury prepares to put Argus to sleep with the persuasive melodies of his flute, and then kills him at the command of Jupiter. Argos, the shepherd with a hundred eyes and endowed with great strength, had been commissioned by Juno to watch over the young Io, loved by Jupiter and transformed by him into a heifer. In this representation, placed within a bucolic landscape, Mercury can be identified with his hat and winged shoes, while playing his flute, and Argus sitting watching the white heifer behind him: as in many representations of this myth, also in works of great fame, Argo is depicted as a simple shepherd, without a hundred eyes and without special gifts. The bucolic rather than dramatic dimension underlines the decorative intent of the panel, which seeks to evoke lightness rather than pathos. The work is in good condition.

Piedmontese landscape

Oil on the table. Signed lower right. On the back this label of the Bolzani Gallery in Milan, with the title of the work. Born in Crespellano (BO) in 1889 by the painter Ugo Gheduzzi, Giuseppe learned the rudiments of art from him together with his brothers Cesare, Mario and Augusto. After his debut in Vignola in 1907 with the painting Alpine landscape, Giuseppe Gheduzzi refined his training in Turin at the Albertina Academy as a pupil of Andrea Marchisio and Paolo Gaidano. Leaving the Academy, he collaborates with his father for the realization of the scenographies of the Teatro Regio. Giuseppe is a skilled landscape painter: he paints Venetian glimpses and panoramas, views of the Piedmont lakes and valleys and of the Ligurian Riviera. But, unlike his brother Cesare, he also excels in interior paintings with figures and orientalist themes: his genre scenes and paintings depicting interiors of craftsmen's shops, antique dealers and stables are particularly appreciated by the public and critics. During his life Giuseppe participated in many reviews of the Promoter of Fine Arts in Turin and in the Circolo degli Artisti in Turin, and made several personal exhibitions. He died in Turin on 21 May 1957. This view of the Piedmont countryside is also part of his vast landscape production, with a solitary figurine walking along the path. The work is presented in a contemporary frame.

Saint George 1992

Oil on panel. Signed bottom right. On the back, with Cyrillic characters, there is the title, the date and the location, Bergamo. The Lithuanian artist, who currently lives and works between Moscow, Italy and the United Kingdom, is considered one of the most important contemporary Russian artists. In his large production there are landscapes, still lifes, many portraits of famous people and his surreal compositions, an expression of his peculiar "dream vision" of reality. Even in this table, albeit in the style of traditional icons, the depiction of the famous St. George is proposed in a surreal key that reminds of De Chirico, in which the dragon is replaced by a goose, the Saint's head is an egg, in the outlines there are figures of sorceresses... a clearly unorthodox interpretation! The panel has a vertical slit. The piece is presented in a frame.

ARARPI0126904
Allegoric Representation of the Usa Oil on Table XVI Century

Oil on table. The work is inspired by a graphic representation of the New Continent widely spread in Europe, following the interest and curiosity aroused by the New World, which made the subject widely used in the artistic-literary productions of the \\\\\\\'500 and\\\\\\\' 600. The allegory of America was conceived as a naked female figure adorned with a feathered headdress and holding a spear. The work proposed here is very close in the compositional structure to a print created by Johannes I Sadeler (Brussel 1550-Venice 1600 ca.) which places, as in this work, the allegorical figure on the right of the scene, while on the left a river landscape with other female figures dressed in the same way. The work presented here has undergone restoration with parqueting of the table. It is presented in a stylish frame.

Oil on board. Signed at the bottom right. On the back there is a stamp of the art studio-workshop in Naples. The view of the Bay of Naples shows a landing place for small fishing boats, along a beach populated by numerous figures. Vesuvius rises in the background, its outline fading into a cloudy grey sky, which takes the sunlight away from the day, illuminated rather by the bustling bustle of people on the promenade. Very little is known about the Neapolitan artist Eduardo Scognamiglio: his work includes numerous views and vistas, mainly of Naples, but also popular genre scenes and portraits of popular figures. His production had a large following abroad, where he was known, appreciated and widely requested, earning him the English name of Edwardo. The painting comes in a revival frame.

Oil on the table. Lombard school of the first half of the 18th century. Large in size, the painting is made on two thick walnut boards, joined by wooden wedges. The choice of support suggests that the production is peripheral, probably from the valley. The scene sees the archangel Gabriel who, from the open skies from which other angels emerge, presents himself to Mary, kneeling in meditation. Particular is the message of the announcement ("Spiritus Sanctus superveniet in Te", or "The Holy Spirit descends on you") that comes out of the Angel's mouth, surmounted by the dove, an effigy of the Spirit of God; moreover the Angel holds in his hand a lily, symbol of purity, in this case of the Virginity of Mary which is preserved. The painting shows traces of previous clumsy restorations, small drops of color and damage to the panels (widespread signs of wormhole). Presented in a stylish frame.

Artist from the province of Pisa, trained first at the Academy of his city and later at that of Florence, thanks to contacts with Telemaco Signorini and Giovanni Fattori, Francesco Gioli landed on painting from life with a rural subject, creating works - such as the one presented here - which constitute the expression of Tuscan Naturalism, in which he managed to convey the nostalgia of the past and the discomfort with the advance of progress. At the beginning of the twentieth century he oriented his production on Florentine views, giving particular emphasis to the atmospheric and luministic rendering in an impressionist sense. The Continence of Scipio Oil on Table Italy XVII Century

Oil on the table. Northern European school of the 17th century. The scene depicts an episode in the life of Scipio narrated by Tito Livio and Valerio Massimo. Publius Cornelius Scipio, later known as Scipio the African, in 209 BC. during the Spanish campaign, after the capture of Cartagena he received as a personal gift a beautiful virgin, who was in the group of hostages. But he, listening to the pleas of his family, respected her by sending her back to her parents and fiancé, with the only recommendation that her betrothed work for peace between Rome and Carthage. In the representation Scipio is in the center, seated on his throne, and turns to the left, to the suppliant parents of the girl, while with a merciful gesture, he indicates to them to take back his daughter, standing on the right, flanked by her boyfriend. All around, soldiers and followers of the king. The scene is full of figures, bright and colorful, and underlines the positivity of the king, a central and powerful character, but capable of meekness and clemency. The restored painting has been reinforced on the back with wooden strips. It is presented in a stylish frame.
