Stanislao Grimaldi

Study of an Officer on Horseback

Lead mine study on paper. Signed in the lower right corner Grimaldi. An oval depicts an officer of the Batteries on horseback charging; at the base coats of arms and military triumphs. The knight's uniform refers to the Carlo Alberto period, around 1845. It is a study by Grimaldi commissioned to him, probably for a print or publication, by the Voloire Regiment, or rather the body of the "Horse Batteries", the particularly mobile artillery units, used in rapid support to the actions of the other units. Stanislao Grimaldi, Count of Poggetto, of Turin, was the official painter of Vittorio Emanuele II, superintendent of the Albertina Academy in Turin and known as an illustrator of Risorgimento battles. The drawing is presented in a frame.

Sketches for Costumes

Tempera on paper. Signed below, the four sketches, presented on two front and back sheets, are accompanied by the title of the character's name and the title of the work. Two propose the costumes for "Il volpone" by Ben Jonson, the other two those of Fenisa and Captain Osorio, characters from the opera "L'amo di Fenisa" by Lope de Vega. The two drawings on the back have the dry pencil wording "No" at the top, evidently because the drawings were discarded by the artist. Extraordinary was the eclectic activity of Emanuele Luzzati, illustrator, set designer, costume designer, decorator, master in every applied art; he was also twice nominated for an Academy Award for two animated films. Interpreter of a skilled and cultured figurative culture, capable of using all sorts of materials with skill (from terracotta to enamel, from the weaving of wool for tapestries to engraving on different supports, to collages of paper and composite fabrics) to build sketches of scenes, costumes, naval fittings, thanks to the richness of his fantastic world, the immediacy and expressiveness of his very personal style, Luzzati was one of the most loved and admired artists of our time. The sketches are presented in a double glass frame.

Consalvo Carelli, Watercolor on Paper, 19th Century

Glimps of Paestum with herd

Watercolor on paper. Signed and placed in Naples on the lower left corner. Consalvo Carelli belonged to the group of neapolitans painters of Posilipo's school that at the beginning of 19th century was exclusively focused on neapolitans landscapes painting. He painted a big amount of works, some oils, but mostly with watercolors and drawings that mostly represent neapolitan landscapes: phlegrean places, Sorrento and Amalfi coast; after being in Rome from 1837 to 1840 he painted from real life the beauty of the roman lands and scenes of popular life. the Verista Tendency combined with the love for the ancient times inspired by his teachers brought him to the prodution of landscapes an glimpses as the one in question where the solemnity of the temple that stands out in the Paestum plain is accompained with a group of figure, the shepherd with his armings, poor and dedicated to their daily life, anaware of the sacral place. The painting is displayed in a frame.
