Additional Information
Artist: Aurelio Catti (1895-1966)
Born in Palermo in 1895, son of the painter Michele Catti and the Palermo noblewoman Anna Contarino, Aurelio, unlike his brothers, followed in his father's footsteps. He soon went to Milan to attend architecture courses at the Brera Academy and later settled in Trieste, participating in the "I Exhibition of Armed Artists and Craftsmen" and obtaining an honorary diploma. Back in Milan, he managed to build a following in the middle class, who willingly bought his landscapes and urban views. In the same years he made a study trip to London. Back in Sicily, he worked as a painter and restorer, supported by the fame of his father. In Palermo he exhibited in personal exhibitions or sometimes with the master Udine. He resumed his father's production, influenced by the painting of De Nittis and Leto. His palette is based on grays and cold colors. His paintings mostly depict urban spaces marked by rain and traversed by fast-moving people. The works of Aurelio Catti can be found in collections in northern Italy and Sicily.Age: XX Century - from 1901 to 2000
The twentieth century is characterized by the prevalence of the bourgeoisie over the working class and by the discovery that life continues to be a struggle for survival and to improve its quality. Technological progress, instead of favoring this development, becomes an instrument of mechanization and drying up of man, who needs to look for a "soul supplement" and new forms to express it. Therefore, a whole series of artistic currents are born that create works expressing the interiority of man, which evoke reality from within rather than represent it, and depict it using, freely, shapes and colors. We therefore have Decadentism with Art Nouveau, Matisse and Braque's Fauvism, Picasso's Cubism, then Expressionism with Munch, Kandinskij's Abstractionism and Metaphysical painting by Carrà and De Chirico. There are numerous currents and groups of artists and intellectuals who use Art as a Manifesto of their thought, often also with a political connotation.Find out more about the 20th century with our insights:
