Description : Chioggia

Oil on the table. Signed lower left. Milanese by birth and training, Leonardo Bazzaro is considered a lively exponent of Lombard impressionism, dedicated to chromatic and luministic research. His very fruitful production of works was dedicated in the early years to Milanese interiors, but then attracted by open-air painting, he moved to landscape views and in particular he was attracted by the color of the Venetian lagoon, which led him to stay for a certain period in Chioggia. As in all of his production, also in this glimpse of the landscape of Chioggia we find a rapid, broad brushstroke, with a strongly material use of colour; the impressionist imprint is evident in the play of light and color. The work is presented in a partial frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Leonardo Bazzaro (1853-1937)

Leonardo Bazzaro was born in Milan in 1853. Brother of the sculptor Ernesto, he began to study under the guidance of Gaetano Fasanotti, a customer of the family shop and holder of the chair of landscape at the Brera Academy, who gave him some private lessons. He then enrolled in the Academy where he attended all the courses becoming Giuseppe Bertini's favorite pupil. At the beginning of his activity he was inspired by the painting of Bisi and Migliara, thus preferring interiors animated by figures, bringing novelties in the study of light and color. In 1873 he participated for the first time in the annual Brera Fine Arts exhibition with the paintings Interior view of Sant'Ambrogio and Interior view of the church of Sant'Alessandro in Milan. Some successes in the context of Milanese competitions earned him the attention of important merchants such as Pisani in Italy and Goupil in Paris with whom he signed contracts that allowed him to increase his notoriety. In the 1980s he began to paint outdoors. He drew inspiration from the lagoon landscapes and alpine valleys of Lombardy and Valle d'Aosta. In 1886, as a guest of the sculptor Luigi Secchi in Miazzina, he met Achille Tominetti whose landscapes and scenes of alpine life he appreciated. In 1896 he moved to Gignese (Novara), preferring intimate themes or those linked to country life. The following year he was present for the first time at the Venice Biennale. Five years later Arnaldo Risi dedicated the first monographic article to him in “Emporium” with the reproduction of the best-known works, facilitating the diffusion of his works also at an international level. In the years that followed, his exhibition commitments became more and more numerous: in fact, in addition to the reviews of the Permanente, the Promotrices of Genoa and Turin, the Venice Biennale, he participated in the Buenos Aires International (1910) and in the Universal Exposition of San Francisco (1915). Leonardo Bazzaro died in the Milanese home of his nephew Ettore in 1937.
