Crayons and collage on paper. At the bottom right are the character's signature and name. On the back there is a label from the Il Vicolo art gallery in Milan. The eclectic activity of Emanuele Luzzati, illustrator, set designer, costume designer, decorator, master of every applied art, was extraordinary; he was also twice nominated for an Academy Award for two animated films. Interpreter of a skilled and cultured figurative culture, capable of masterfully using all sorts of materials (from terracotta to enamel, from wool weaving for tapestries to engraving on different supports, to collages of composite papers and fabrics) to construct sketches of scenes, costumes, naval displays, thanks to the richness of his fantastic world, the immediacy and expressiveness of his very personal style, Luzzati was one of the most loved and admired artists of our time. The sketch is presented in a frame.

Emanuele Luzzati was born in Genoa in 1921. He studied and graduated in Lausanne at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Painter, decorator, illustrator, ceramist, he dedicated himself to theatrical sets and costumes, and later to the creation of films and animated drawings. He has created more than four hundred sets for prose, opera and dance in the main Italian and foreign theatres; we remember his participation in the London Festival Ballet, the Glyndebourne Festival, the Chicago Opera House and the Staatsoper Theater in Vienna; he exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1972 in the Experimental Graphics section. In 1975 he was among the founders of the Teatro della Tosse in Genoa together with Tonino Conte and Aldo Trionfo. Emanuele Luzzati has also illustrated many books including in 1988 "The Selected Fairy Tales" by the Brothers Grimm in the out-of-print edition of the Olivetti Company. Luzzati is part of AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale) and the Academy. In 1992 he was awarded an honorary degree in Architecture by the University of Genoa. In 1993 the Union of European Theaters organized the exhibition “Emanuele Luzzati scenographer” which was set up, as its first venue, at the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris. In 1995 he received the Ubu award for the best Italian theatrical scenography of the year for the scenes of Pinocchio. In Genoa in 1996 an anthological exhibition of his work was set up at the Palazzo Ducale. In 1997 he created the "Magic Flute Park" for children in S. Margherita Ligure and created the nativity scene in Piazza Carlo Felice in Turin. In 2001 in Genoa, in the evocative sixteenth-century location of Porta Siberia, “Luzzati a Porta Siberia” was opened, a museum dedicated to his entire work as a set designer and illustrator. Also in 2001, the city of Prague dedicated two exhibitions to him, one on scenography and one on illustration. Emanuele Luzzati died in Genoa in 2007.
